Responsibilities of Direct Support Professionals
As a Direct Support Professional at Eleina Support, you play a crucial role in delivering person-centered care and support to individuals with IDD. Your responsibilities include:
- 1. Personal Care: • Assist individuals with daily activities, including personal hygiene, dressing, and grooming. • Support individuals in maintaining their physical well-being and health. • Administer medications as prescribed, ensuring adherence to proper protocols.
- 2. Skill Development: • Help individuals develop and enhance their independent living skills, such as cooking, cleaning, and budgeting. • Facilitate opportunities for socialization and community engagement. • Encourage and support individuals in pursuing their personal goals and aspirations.
- 3. Emotional Support: • Foster a safe and nurturing environment that promotes emotional well-being. • Provide active listening, empathy, and compassionate support to individuals. • Encourage individuals to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns.
- 4. Behavioral Support: • Implement behavior support plans developed in collaboration with the individual, their families, and the interdisciplinary team. • Utilize positive behavioral interventions and strategies to promote positive outcomes. • Document and report any behavioral incidents or concerns according to organizational guidelines.
- 5. Documentation and Reporting: • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of daily activities, services provided, and individual progress. • Report any significant changes in behavior, health, or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisors.
- 6. Team Collaboration: • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including case managers, therapists, and healthcare professionals. • Attend team meetings, trainings, and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills. • Share insights, observations, and recommendations for individualized care planning.
Qualifications and Skills of Direct Support Professionals
To be successful as a Direct Support Professional at Eleina Support, the following qualifications and skills are required:
- • High school diploma or equivalent (additional certifications or degrees in relevant fields are advantageous).
- • Previous experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities or similar populations.
- • Knowledge of person-centered care principles and best practices in the field of IDD.
- • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- • Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact on individuals’ lives.
- • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- • Basic computer skills for documentation and communication purposes.
- • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
